That’s why, in this blog, we will explore some of the city’s most important, beautiful, and iconic museums—places where history comes to life and invites us to discover more about the soul of Mérida.
"Museo de la ciudad de Mérida"
Hours & Admission: Free entry
Tuesday to Friday: 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
In this museum, collections of Mayan pre-Hispanic, colonial, and contemporary pieces are on display. It is housed in a building of great historical importance, as it served as the post office between 1908 and 1995.
The museum is divided into several galleries that take you through the history of Mérida. It begins with the pre-Hispanic period, focused on Mayan culture and the ancient city of T’ho. It then continues into the colonial era, showcasing aspects such as the founding of the city, daily life, and evangelization.
It also explores the 19th century and the early 20th century, highlighting economic growth, the henequen haciendas, and social changes. Finally, it presents the 20th century, featuring elements of modern Mérida, including its culture, traditions, architecture, and social life.
A truly important museum for those who want to discover the history of this beautiful city in greater depth.

This is a relatively recent museum, founded in 2018 with the goal of preserving and sharing traditional and popular Mexican music. It has a total of five galleries, each showcasing different themes: “Background, musical cultures, music in the media, music protagonists, and musical formation and expansion.”
Being an interactive museum, it is ideal for family visits, as it is designed to entertain and be enjoyed by people of all ages. Personally, it is one of my favorites, as it offers a journey through the history of music, its evolution, and highlights some of the most important artists in Mexican music.
Additionally, there is an option to pay extra for a guided tour, where you can learn even more details about each exhibition.
"Gran museo del mundo maya"

Wednesday to Monday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Admission: Foreigners $150, Nationals $100, Yucatecos $50
The Gran Museo del Mundo Maya is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive museums in Mérida. Its modern and interactive design makes the visit very dynamic, allowing you to explore Mayan culture in a more accessible and engaging way.
Throughout its galleries, the museum takes you on a journey from the ancient Maya to today’s communities, showing how their culture, traditions, and way of life have been preserved over time. Personally, I think it’s a place that makes you appreciate even more the cultural richness of the region.
It also often features interesting temporary exhibitions and well-designed spaces, such as a children’s area and a screening room, making it an excellent option for visiting with family or friends.
Tip: Stay updated on their social media to find out about the screenings in their cinema and temporary exhibitions.
"Quinta montes molina"

La Quinta Montes Molina is one of the most charming house museums you can visit in Mérida. It is a historic mansion built in the early 20th century in neoclassical style, which has preserved almost all of its original interior, allowing you to imagine how the upper-class society of the “green gold” era in Yucatán lived.
Walking through its rooms filled with European furniture, crystal chandeliers, and marble floors feels like stepping back in time. I love it because, even though it’s a house museum, it feels authentic and not like a cold exhibition space; it almost seems like the family still lives there.
In addition to the historic rooms, there are beautiful gardens, and if you’re interested, you can take a guided tour to learn more details and anecdotes about the place.
Tip: Plan to spend at least 1 hour exploring the house and gardens, as there are many interesting details worth discovering.
